What is HSAB?

Mechanical breakdown coverage your insurance won’t touch

Home insurance covers sudden, accidental events — a fire, a burst pipe, a storm. It does not cover the everyday reality of mechanical or electrical failure: the dishwasher motor that gives out, the furnace that stops igniting, the central AC that quits on the hottest day of the year.

HSAB fills exactly that gap. Coverage begins after your manufacturer’s warranty ends, with no pre-inspection required and no age restrictions on your home or appliances.

Underwritten by Aviva Insurance Company of Canada and available exclusively through HUB Warranty to homeowners and condo owners in BC, AB, SK, and MB.

How Age Affects Coverage

Coverage that adapts to your home.

Unlike most warranty programs, HSAB doesn’t shut you out as your appliances age. Instead, the way we resolve a claim adjusts — so you’re protected at every stage of your home’s life.

5 YEARS OR NEWER

Repair or Replace
Like-new functionality, restored.

If repair is possible, we’ll handle it with like kind and quality parts. If not, we’ll replace your appliance or system with a comparable equivalent — at original retail price, or as a cash settlement up to retail replacement value.

OVER 5 YEARS

Repair or Cash Settlement
Flexibility, your way.

We’ll still repair when it’s cost-effective. When it isn’t, you’ll receive a cash settlement — the greater of $1,000 (home systems), $500 (appliances), or the manufacturer’s last known list price for needed parts. The choice of what to do next is yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions, straight answers.

How is HSAB different from my home insurance?

Home insurance covers damage from sudden events like fire or flood. HSAB covers mechanical and electrical breakdown from normal use — the wear-and-tear failures your insurance specifically excludes.

What products are included?

Refrigerator, stove, washer/dryer, dishwasher, central heating and cooling, interior plumbing, and interior electrical systems are covered in the base packages. Optional add-ons extend coverage to items like pools, hot tubs, fireplaces, garage door openers, and more.

What's the maximum coverage I can get?

Annual aggregate limits range from $5,000 (Appliances Only) to $25,000 (Home Plus). Individual products carry their own sub-limits — for example, $4,000 for refrigerators, $4,000 for central heating, and $3,500 for air conditioning or heat pumps. Each covered product is also limited to a maximum of 2 repairs in any 12-month period.

Who can purchase a plan?

Owner-occupied homes and condos under 10,000 sq. ft. in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The program is not available for rentals, vacation properties, lease-to-own arrangements, or life-lease homes.

When does my coverage start?

Coverage begins 15 days after your application date (the waiting period), and only after your manufacturer’s warranty — or any applicable BC Homeowner Protection Act or AB New Home Buyer Protection Act warranty — has expired on that product or system.

How does the age of my appliance affect my coverage?

For products 5 years old or newer, we repair or replace them. For products over 5 years old, we repair or provide a cash settlement, giving you flexibility in how you proceed. Either way, you’re protected from unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

How do I file a claim?

Claims are handled by our authorized claims administrator. Call 1-888-668-8020 or email info@claimwarranty.com Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM EST. A certified technician will be assigned, and if repair isn’t possible, you’ll receive a replacement or cash settlement. Please do not arrange repairs yourself before contacting the claims administrator — unauthorized repairs are not reimbursable.
